Colony officers are trained at the Zone 5 Law Enforcement Training Center in Schenectady, NY. The 24-week program includes instruction on various laws, procedures, firearms, defensive tactics and emergency vehicle operations. Upon completion of the Academy, officers begin a 5-month continuing education program under the guidance of a Field Training Officer. Check the Equal Employment Opportunity Plan to ensure compliance with the RPD. Candidate Colony police officers must pass a written New York State Civil Service Examination administered by the Colony City Department of Public Service. The written examination is held every three years. The starting salary for this position is $54,914. The salary after 5 years is $81,759.

Before the end of the probationary period, satisfactory completion of the training school is required. Possession and maintenance of certification in NYSPIN terminal operations and emergency medical dispatch is required prior to the end of the probationary period.
